The student voice will be heard at Carroll County High School through a resurrected source - The Carroll Chronicle student newspaper.

Daniel Sandefur, a World Civilizations teacher at CCHS, said he noticed there were no news productions this year so he began seeking a way for the students’ voices to be heard.

The end result was reviving The Carroll Chronicle.

“It’s been a long time since we've had a student newspaper, but print journalism is making a resurgence,” he said. Approximately 20 students will be on staff. Sandefur said he wants to teach the students about journalism concepts, how to differentiate news from opinion, how to source stories and how to tell what is fabricated and what is authentic news.

The Chronicle will be printed on standard size paper rather than newsprint because the school does not have a printing press. It will feature three columns of space on each page for stories and will be all in black and white.

Students will work on the paper during a 90-minute session each Friday that will essentially become their Journalism class. The goal is to publish the first issue on May 3.

It’s possible the stories that do not get published will become part of a new podcast, a development that is completely student driven according to Sandefur.

“It’s evolved very rapidly to something very cool,” he said.
