Two teams of Cartmell students will compete in the state STLP (student technology leadership program) in March.
The Animal Savers and Nature Warriors participated in the regional competition virtually. Both were selected to move on to the state level.
Animal Savers Emma Marsh, Harper Wilson, Deacon Sellers and Bryston Marksberry have created a plan for animals in the Carroll County Animal Shelter.
“Our goal is to try and help as many animals as we can,” Emma said.
Bryston noted they want to keep the animals at the shelter healthy, which should help them get adopted and then provide more room for other animals in need.
The group would like to have an adoption day, but they’re still working on details with Shelter Director Teresa Hehe. Last year the Animal Savers team collected items for the shelter as well.
“We would like to expand the drive into the community,” Bryston said. “Last year we did it at the school only.”
Their project includes placing donation bins at area businesses and relying on their parents to help collect donated items.
The Nature Warriors, including Monte Evans, Raislin Wainscott, Kylee Estes and Kitana Keller, are working to help the planet.
They created a recycling program for Cartmell Elementary. Monte explained they want to set up bins throughout the school to collect all types of recyclable items.
Raistlin noted they want to incorporate the school houses into the project as well by painting recycling bins to match house colors and calculating how many recyclables a house collects.
“It’s a win for the planet and a win for the house that wins,” Raistlin said.
The state STLP competition is March 27 at Rupp Arena in Lexington. The students are coached by Diane McCarthy.
