KWP’s Landon Martin advances to state spelling bee

Carrollton, Ky. - Jan. 13, 2020 - First-grade student Landon Martin of Kathryn Winn Primary is advancing to the state competition in the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Spelling Bee, hosted by Kentucky School for the Deaf.

Landon placed third at a regional competition in December and will compete in the state competition in March, where he will spell against other first-grade students who advanced from their own regional competitions.

“Landon has worked very hard learning to spell these words at home and at school,” said coach Melody Stark. “He will have a new set of words for the state spelling bee in March. He is learning the signs that go with the words to help him differentiate between homophones, such as ‘ate’ and ‘eight,’ etc. I am so proud of him and his accomplishments.”

In this special spelling bee format, the spelling words are both said in spoken English and signed in American Sign Language by competition moderators. Students then spell the words on a white board. The competition is open to all students in first through twelfth grades who are deaf or hard of hearing.
