Legion boosts effort to improve Cartmell playground

Legion presents check to Cartmell

Carrollton, Ky. – June 22, 2022 – With a $2,500 donation, American Legion Post 41 is helping Cartmell Elementary make its playground more inclusive, fun and safe. Additionally, thanks to the City of Carrollton allowing Cartmell to make an application in its stead for a Land Water Conservation Grant, donations toward the playground are matched dollar-for-dollar, up to a total expenditure of $80,000. Therefore, the Legion’s $2,500 donation will have a $5,000 impact.

“For many years, American Legion Post 41 has provided opportunities for not just veterans, but the children and youth of this community to make Carroll County a better place to call home,” said Nick Marsh, Cartmell SBDM member. “We are very grateful for the contribution that they have made to our playground. In addition, we appreciate all of the individuals, businesses and industries that have contributed to the playground over the years.”

To ensure students have input into the design of the playground, administrators at Cartmell Elementary devised a student playground committee. Students brainstormed ideas for their dream playground.
"We are overwhelmed by the generosity of gracious community members for helping turn these students' dreams into reality," said Brandi Wells, Principal at Cartmell.

Since its renovation, Cartmell has had to retire several pieces of older play equipment on its playground, leaving just a few structures for the children to play on. Of what is left, there are not many playground pieces that are inclusive of all students, regardless of physical ability. The students, parents, teachers, administration and SBDM of Cartmell have been on a mission for the past several years to buy quality equipment for its playground. Events have included a Father/Daughter dance, Mother/Son mini-golf tournament, student-led Little Lambs cookie dough and art auction to raise funds for this cause. In recent years, the Cartmell SBDM has raised $28,663.10 toward its goal. The Carroll County School District is also contributing $10,000 toward the project.

Once hearing of this effort, the Cartmell SBDM was contacted by the American Legion Post 41 in Carrollton, who indicated that they wanted to assist in building a better playground at Cartmell Elementary.

“Our local American Legion Post is always looking for ways to help the community,” Marsh said. “We appreciate their donation so much. It will make a difference for many children in our community. We also appreciate the example the Legion has set for the rest of the community. Our work on this playground is far from finished. If any person, business or industry would like to make a contribution to our playground fund to help make this dream a reality, please contact Cartmell's Principal, Brandi Wells, at (502) 732-7085 or Cartmell SBDM Member Nick Marsh at (502) 732-4281.”
